How We Handle It
Here’s how we approach a bathroom project, from demo through final installation.
Assess and waterproof the substrate
In roughly half the older McMinnville homes we work in, original tile was set over drywall, not cementboard or a waterproofing membrane. We demo, assess, address any moisture damage, and install a proper waterproofing layer before any new tile goes up. That’s what prevents the same failure from happening again in 15 years.
Back-butter every tile for full mortar coverage
Large-format tile requires 95% mortar coverage in wet areas. Each tile is back-buttered individually and verified with a beat block during installation. We pull a tile every 15–20 pieces to confirm coverage is consistent throughout the job.
Level the vanity to the actual floor
McMinnville bathroom floors often have a slight pitch from decades of subfloor movement. We shim, level, and scribe the base trim to the real floor. The vanity looks installed, not just placed.
Timeline
Floor tile replacement: 2–3 days. Shower retile: 3–5 days plus cure time. Complete bathroom refresh: 1–2 weeks.
